Havant Cadet Given Seat On Trooping The Colour Flypast

Voyager in flypast over London

On Saturday 15th June 2013, Cadet Warrant Officer Elliott Sexton of 2327 (Havant) Sqn and Sqn Ldr Brian Swan former OC of the Sqn were given the opportunity of a lifetime; a seat in the Royal Air Force’s newly commissioned Airbus A330 Voyager Aircraft during the annual Trooping the Colour flypast over Buckingham Palace.

The day was to start at 05:30, with a lengthy drive to RAF Brize Norton, the RAF’s largest station, where CWO Sexton and 5 other lucky cadets from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wing were to meet with other hand-picked cadets from across the country. The cadets were to be assigned to three of the 87 aircraft which were to take part in the flypast, the Tristar, VC10 and finally the Voyager, which would be escorted by 2 Typhoon and 2 Tornado fighter jets.

Luckily for us, CWO Sexton and Sqn Ldr Swan were assigned to the new Voyager, allowing for some fantastic photo opportunities from the window of the aircraft as the convoy assembled over the North Sea, before carrying out the challenging low level pass over Buckingham Palace. CWO Sexton’s experience goes to show that success and long service within the ATC can be rewarded with some truly amazing experiences, and a chance to be a part of history.
